The Texas Gulf Coast

The Texas Coast starts just west of Sabine, and stretches 370 miles south to the Rio Grande Valley. In between is a vast ecosystem of shallow bays, barrier islands, salt and freshwater marshes, which support an enormous amount of birds and wildlife.

Thanks to the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department's restocking program and release policies the redfish and  trout populations have increased dramatically over the last several years. For the fisherman this means an abundance of sport and game fish.

For the birder, the coast offers many opportunities to view one of the most spectacular arrays of bird life in the world. The Rio Grande Valley alone hosts many rare species found nowhere else in the United States.

Access to this coastal wonderland is easy thanks to the many State and National Parks located along the Texas coast. Upper and middle coast parks like Sea Rim, Galveston Island, Matagorda, and Goose Island reward you with scenic beauty, and abundant wildlife watching opportunities.

Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley and Boca Chica State Parks, along with Padre Island National Seashore to are just a few of the extraordinary places waiting for you to explorer.

There are many options for the shore bound angler at Surfside. You can try your hand at wade fishing the surf ( as the fishermen in this video ) if the surf isn't producing you can wade fish the bay ( any number of the gravel/dirt roads will get you there ).

If you prefer to stay high and dry, try the jetties at both Surfside or Quintana, the San Luis Pass fishing pier and the Brian Beach fishing pier.

San Luis Pass Fishing Pier is an outstanding place to fish. All kinds of saltwater fish, including, redfish, speckle trout and flounder, even large fish such as shark and tarpon gather around this deep water pier.

San Luis Pass, the water connection between the Gulf of Mexico and West Bay, lies between Galveston Island and Surfside. The pass is about two miles long and between ten and forty feet deep.  The county line between Brazoria and Galveston counties runs through San Luis Pass.
