Pearland, Texas

Located 18 miles south of downtown Houston, Pearland is less than 25 minutes from the Theater District, Minute Maid Park, Toyota Center and other entertainment venues that have revitalized the urban center. Reliant Center, home of the Texans near the internationally acclaimed Texas Medical Center, is about 20 minutes north of Pearland.

Between Texas 288 and I-45 south of the Sam Houston Tollway, Pearland is a central hub offering residents fast access to employers in the Texas Medical Center, downtown business district, Galleria, Hobby Airport, NASA, Port of Houston, energy corridor, and the petrochemical complex in Lake Jackson. Nature lovers are less than 45 minutes from fishing and camping at Brazos Bend State Park, Surfside, and Galveston.

Master-planned communities like Shadow Creek Ranch and Silver Lake, new apartment-home communities, and growing retail and commercial centers along FM 518 and Highway 35, provide a variety of places to live and work in Pearland.

Pearland uniquely blends the slower pace of a small town with the buzz of a growing metropolis. It is a great place to raise a family, open a new business or expand an existing enterprise...

While maintaining a high level of scholastic performance, the Pearland Independent School District is one of the fastest growing districts in the state.

When it comes to higher education, Pearland residents have several choices from Houston Community College, Alvin Junior College and University of Houston, to institutions like Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Texas in the Texas Medical Center.

Pearland and the Santa Fe Railroad

The Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe railroad built a siding switch called "Mark Belt" near the Chamber of Commerce in 1883 as part of it's Houston to Alvin branch rail line. In 1893 William Zychlinski purchased 2560 acres in this area which he subdivided and platted in 1894. Included in Zychlinski's subdivision was the 273 acre township of Pearland.

S.M. Christensen, President of the Southern Homestead Co., contracted to develop the township. As part of a plan to attract settlers to the township Christensen planted numerous Pear and other fruit trees.

In 1900 the Santa Fe Railroad built a depot nearby which soon became a gathering place for settlers to meet visitors and pick up mail and supplies. Locally produced cotton, hay, cattle, fruit and vegetables were shipped to market by railroad from the depot.

Pearland's development, delayed by the devastating Storm of 1900, surged about 1910 as the Allison-Richey suburban Gardens Co. successfully promoted the area as an agricultural wonderland with vital railroad access.

Oil production, cattle ranching, and hay, rice, and fig farming sustained Pearland's growth. The railroads importance diminished and in 1972 the depot closed. It was donated to the city and moved to it's present location, through the efforts of many citizens and organizations.
